accreditation

The process by which an organization, usually the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, sanctions teacher-education programs. The council gives certain programs—about 500 of the some 1,300 that prepare teachers—its seal of approval for quality. States also approve teacher-education programs, by means of issuing teaching licenses to their graduates.
